Abstract

Over a century ago, Andrew Carnegie, one of the leading figures in philanthropy noted in his Gospel of Wealth, “the problem of our age is the proper administration of wealth, so that the ties of brotherhood may still bind together the rich and poor in harmonious relationship”. That problem seems ever more real today in the face of rising inequalities. In its 2019 Human Development Report, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) noted that inequalities remain widespread, reflecting power imbalances across communities. Clearly, there is a greater impetus for philanthropic organisations to be deliberate in tackling inequalities and their impact on those disproportionately affected.
